My mom had been a teacher for a long time in our small town. She said she didn't want to be put on display in a funeral home - so we kept her at home for two days so close friends could stop by and visit. Until we read (Last Expenses) we didn't know you could do that or how. Two weeks later we put a death notice in our paper and announced a Memorial Service at a party room in a local restaurant. We had snack food and a cash bar. Over two hundred people came by to visit and exchange stories and photos - three generations of them. It was wonderful. JM - UT
Last year there were two funerals - my mother and younger 'Agent Orange' brother. My brother was very sick - even went to pick out his own coffin. When I think back over the impersonal funeral home services - the limos - and all the rest - and think what could have been done - all the money his kids could have used - I get angry. My brothers and I just didn't know any better. VAL - IA
When my father died he said he wanted to be cremated and didn't want any fancy show at a funeral home - was going directly to the crematorium. The funeral home people said he had to be embalmed. Because I had read the Manual (Last Expenses) I told them they were either stupid or lying. We went to another funeral place that did what we wanted. PS - CO
We had never been told that you could rent a casket. For this funeral we insisted or said we were going to another place. We saved almost $1200 of needless expense. PJ - TX
When our brother died, the three of us other brothers decided we would build out own casket instead of sitting around doing nothing. We knew from reading (Last Expenses) that we could tell the funeral home we were bringing our own. We got the instructions on the internet - the lumberyard cut the materials for us. Cost less then $50. We assembled it in less then an hour drinking beer just like the four of us used to do together. When done, we set it in on the kitchen table and the four wives and our mom got some fabric for the outside and inside. Better then crying. SP - AZ
